The Theme for the 2013 Black History Month is the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality: The Emancipation Proclamation and the March on Washington.

This year marks two important anniversaries in the history of African Americans and the United States. On January 1, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation set the United States on the path of ending slavery. A wartime measure issued by President Abraham Lincoln, the proclamation freed relatively few slaves, but it fueled the fire of the enslaved to strike for their freedom.he year 2013 marks two important anniversaries in the history of African Americans and the United States.

On January 1, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation set the United States on the path of ending slavery. A wartime measure issued by President Abraham Lincoln, the proclamation freed relatively few slaves, but it fueled the fire of the enslaved to strike for their freedom.

In 1963, a century later, America once again stood at the crossroads. Nine years earlier, the U.S. Supreme Court had outlawed racial segregation in public schools, but the nation had not yet committed itself to equality of citizenship. Segregation and innumerable other forms of discrimination made second class citizenship the extra constitutional status of non whites.

On August 28, 1963, hundreds of thousands of Americans, blacks and whites, Jews and gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, marched to the memorial of Abraham Lincoln, the author of the Emancipation Proclamation, in the continuing pursuit of equality of citizenship and self-determination. It was on this occasion that Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered his celebrated “I Have a Dream” speech. Just as the Emancipation Proclamation had recognized the coming end of slavery, the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom announced that the days of legal segregation in the United States were numbered.

This poster marks the sesquicentennial of the Emancipation Proclamation and the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington.

    Information on the poster reads:

    Top:

In 1918, not yet citizens of the U.S., Choctaw members of the American Expeditionary Forces were asked to use their Native language as a powerful tool against the German Forces in World War I, setting a precedent for code talking as an effective military weapon and establishing them as America's original Code Talkers. Bottom left to right:

Commander John Bennett Herrington is the first tribally-enrolled Native American Indian Astronaut to fly in outer space. During NASA flight STS-113 aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor in November 2002, Mission Specialist 2 Harrington docked the space shuttle to the International Space Station and became the first American Indian to walk in space during the space mission during the historic #-day NASA space mission. Mary G. Ross (August 9, 1908 - April 29, 2008), the first Native American female engineer, graduated from Northeastern State College (now Northeastern University), in 1928, with a degree in mathematics. Her alma mater was founded by her great-great grandfather, Chief John Ross, who led the Cherokee tribes during their forced removal to the west. Ross' family emphatically supported the Cherokee tradition of emphasizing education, and equally so for both genders. Master Sergeant Woodrow Wilson Keeble (1917-1982) was a highly-decorated war veteran of both World War II and the Korean War. He was a full-blooded member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate of the Lake Traverse Reservation, a Sioux American Indian tribe. Following a long campaign by his family and the congressional delegations of both North and South Dakota, on March 3, 2008, President George W. Bush posthumously awarded Keeble the Medal of Honor for his actions in the Korean War. Keeble had previously been awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star with V device for Valor, the Bronze Star for merit, and the Combat Infantryman Badge (first and second awards). Although he was wounded at least twice in World War II and three times in Korea, he received only two Purple Hearts.
