Women’s History celebrated in March in the United States!

1911 marked the first International Women’s Day, but it wasn’t until 1981 that Senators Orrin Hatch and Barbara Mikulski sponsored the joint Congressional Resolution proclaiming a Women’s History Week. In 1987 Congress expanded it to an entire month. This year’s theme, sponsored by the National Women’s History Project, is “Women Inspiring Innovation Through Imagination: Celebrating Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.”

March 8th celebrated as International Women’s Day

Beginning as part of a socialist movement for greater women’s rights, this day was first celebrated on the last Sunday in February by the Conference of Socialist Women in Copenhagen in 1910. It was later changed to March 8th to honor the role of women in the Russian Revolution. In the 1960s the resurgence of feminism served to renew interest in International Women’s Day as a day to celebrate women’s lives and work.
